[00:00:03] WELCOME TO THE HEART OF PLANO, WHERE WE COMMEMORATE A SIGNIFICANT MOMENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY WITH OUR JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION. THE JUNETEENTH PARADE WINDS THROUGH OUR STREETS, A VIBRANT DISPLAY OF UNITY AND REMEMBRANCE. I'M FROM THIS COMMUNITY. I GREW UP HERE. I'VE BEEN HERE FOR THE WHOLE 22 YEARS OF MY LIFE, SO JUST KIND OF WANTING TO BRING PEOPLE TO THIS AREA. WE'RE ALSO CELEBRATING OUR A HUNDRED AND 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DOUGLAS COMMUNITY. UM, SO JUST KIND OF LIKE A REALLY BIG CELEBRATION TODAY. JUNETEENTH IS WE EVERYTHING, BECAUSE JUNETEENTH IS WHERE PEOPLE OF COLOR IN TEXAS WERE ACTUALLY FREED AS FAR AS IT TOOK AN AWFUL LONG TIME FOR IT TO GET TO TEXAS WHERE THEY EVENTUALLY DID, AND IT MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD FOR THE CITIZENS OF TEXAS. WELL, JUNETEENTH OBVIOUSLY BEING AN AFRICAN AMERICAN, IT'S IMPORTANT FOR, UH, FOR ME, BUT I THINK IT SHOULD BE IMPORTANT FOR ALL AMERICANS. THAT WAS, YOU KNOW, EIGHT BACK IN 1865 WHEN THE LAST OF, OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY WAS FINALLY FREE. THAT IS SOMETHING I THINK THAT OUR ENTIRE COUNTRY CAN BE PROUD OF, AND IT WAS AWESOME TO SEE OUR CONGRESS AND OUR PRESIDENT SIGN THIS, UH, HOLIDAY IN THE LAW TO MAKE IT A NATIONAL HOLIDAY. AND IT'S GREAT TO CELEBRATE IT HERE IN THE CITY OF PLANO AT LEGACY WEST. THE HEARTBEAT OF AFRICA ECHOES THROUGH THE AIR AS WE CELEBRATE THE RICHNESS OF AFRICAN HERITAGE WITH PERFORMANCES THAT RESONATE WITH JOY AND PRIDE. THE FUN WAY OF US CELEBRATING NOT ONLY OUR TRADITIONS, BUT KEEPING IT ALIVE BY PUTTING A LITTLE BIT OF THE DRINK THAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING IN THE MIX. WITNESS THE INTERSECTION OF TRADITION AND STYLE AT OUR FASHION SHOW WHERE EVERY GARMENT TELLS A STORY OF RESILIENCE AND CREATIVITY. IT'S A TRIBUTE TO CELEBRATING FREEDOM IN ITS TRUEST SENSE. JUNETEENTH ALSO KNOWN AS FREEDOM DAY, JUBILEE DAY, LIBERATION DAY AND EMANCIPATION DAY IS A HOLIDAY THAT CELEBRATES THE EMANCIPATION OF THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN ENSLAVED IN OUR NATION. WE HONOR THE JOURNEY TOWARDS FREEDOM AND THE SPIRIT OF RESILIENCE THAT DEFINES US AS A COMMUNITY. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US IN CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH AND PLANO. * This transcript was created by voice-to-text technology.
